Heute: Afternoon Tea im Browns Hotel/London

Ein Afternoon Tea ist immer eine ganz besondere Gelegenheit und dank einer Freundin, die mich über die letzten Jahre schon zu verschiedenen dieser Afternoon Teas an meinen Geburtstagen eingeladen hat, konnte ich die besten davon, die London zu bieten hat, probieren. Für mich steht Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair/London ganz oben auf der Liste.
Im ältesten Hotel Londons nahm schon Königin Viktoria ihren Tee ein.
Hier wird der Afternoon Tea im Salon des Hotels serviert, welches, so besagt es die Website, das älteste in London sei, und in dem bereits Queen Viktoria gerne ihren Afternoon Tea einnahm. Wenn man in diesem Salon sitzt, kommt man sich wie ein Gast in einem englischen Landhaus vor. Die Wände sind mit originalen Holzvertäfelungen verkleidet, im Kamin brennt ein richtiges Feuer und es gibt gemütliche, bequeme Sessel und Sofas. Ich konnte mir leicht Miss Marple vorstellen, wie sie an einem Tisch in der Ecke saß und diskret alles und jeden beobachtete. Tatsächlich soll das Hotel die Inspiration für Agatha Christies Krimi At Bertram’s Hotel gewesen sein.
Man fühlt sich wie in einem englischen Landhaus.
Hier gibt es keinen Glanz und Glamour wie im The Ritz oder The Dorchester in London, lediglich reine schlichte Eleganz. Man begrüßte uns warmherzig und freundlich, und während der ganzen Mahlzeit war der Service stets ausgewogen freundlich und aufmerksam. Wir fühlten uns sofort wohl in der gemütlichen Atmosphäre und empfanden nie Hektik. An einem benachbarten Tisch saß eine Familie, was dazu beitrug, dass wir uns wie ein Gast in einer Landhausparty fühlten.
Die Speisen waren äußerst delikat. Wir hatten für 12.30 Uhr gebucht, so konnten wir so tun, als wäre es unser Mittagessen und ohne schlechtes Gewissen soviel essen wie wir wollten. Wir wählten unsere Getränke aus einer reichhaltigen Auswahl traditioneller Teesorten und Kräutertees. Als erstes kamen die Sandwiches, welche aus einer Auswahl mit verschiedenen Brotsorten mit köstlichen Füllungen bestanden, wie z.B. Räucherlachs, Eiermayonnaise und natürlich Gurken. Die Sandwiches waren ansprechend zugeschnitten und die Rinde abgetrennt. Wir lehnten die Angebote zum Nachlegen ab, da wir wussten, dass noch Etliches kommen würde. Als zweiten Gang bot man uns eine Variation an traditionellen warmen Scones mit Marmelade und Clotted Cream und sowohl süßes als auch herzhaftes Gebäck an. Zum Abschluss servierte man diverse Kuchen vom Dundee Cake bis zu einer luftig-leichten Lebkuchen Mousse, alles serviert auf einer eleganten, silbernen Etagere.
Einzigartige Atmosphäre, Eleganz und historisches Flair
Du wirst ausgezeichnetes Essen genießen, wo immer du deinen Afternoon Tea einnehmen möchtest. In Bezug darauf macht Brown’s keinen Unterschied. Was es jedoch von Anderen abhebt, sind die einzigartige Atmosphäre, Eleganz und das historische Flair. All das hat meinen Afternoon Tea zu etwas ganz Besonderem gemacht.

Afternoon tea is always a special occasion and thanks to a friend, who has treated me to several such teas on my birthday over the past few years, I have been able to sample London’s finest. For me, Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair comes top of the list.
Queen Victoria liked to take afternoon tea there
Afternoon tea is served in The Drawing Room of the hotel, which states on its website that it is the oldest hotel in London and that Queen Victoria liked to take afternoon tea there. Sitting in the Drawing Room feels like being a guest in an English country house. The walls are covered in original wood panelling, there are real fires in the fire places and cosy, comfortable armchairs and sofas. I could easily imagine Miss Marple sitting at a corner table, discreetly observing everything and everyone. Indeed, the hotel is said to have been the inspiration for Agatha Christie’s At Bertram’s Hotel.
A feeling of being a guest at a country house party.
There is none of glitz and glamour of places such as The Ritz and The Dorchester, just pure understated elegance. We were greeted in a warm and friendly way and the service had the perfect balance of friendliness and attentiveness throughout the meal. We immediately felt comfortable in the cosy atmosphere and never felt rushed. There was a family group at a nearby table, which added to the feeling of being a guest at a country house party.
The food was absolutely delicious. We had chosen the 12.30 sitting, which meant we could pretend it was lunch and not feel at all guilty no matter how much we ate. We chose our drinks from a huge selection of traditional and herbal teas then settled down to our treat. First came the sandwiches – a selection of different types of bread with the most delicious fillings such as smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise and of course, cucumber. The sandwiches were delicately cut, with the crusts trimmed off and we had to be careful to refuse offers of seconds as we knew there was so much else to come. Next we were offered a selection of traditional warm scones with jam and Cornish cream along with other pastries both sweet and savoury. To finish we had cakes ranging from Dundee cake to a light and airy gingerbread mousse. All served on an elegant three tier silver cake stand.
A unique atmosphere, elegance and sense of history
Whichever place you choose to have afternoon tea you will probably have superb food. In this respect, Browns is no different. What sets it apart is its unique atmosphere, elegance and sense of history, which all made my tea there very special indeed.
A very good atmosphere for an excellent Afternoon Tea in Germany is Schlosshotel Kronberg.
