„My first experience of the German nation came though my Father’s longterm friendship with Lotte Reiniger, the German animator. For me as a child growing up in rural England, the German people represented fairy stories, creativity, Christmas carols like ‚Silent Night‘ (Stille Nacht), ‚Oh Christmas Tree‘ (O Tannenbaum) and magical Christmases. Any nation that can have Christmas trees that are decorated so beautifully, and as I discovered when I grew up amazing Christmas biscuits (Lebkuchen) and jolly festive markets had to be special. Making friends with Germans from various parts of Germany has also taught me that above all (in general) they are totally trustworthy, loyal and know how to work hard, but also how to enjoy life to the full.“
