Corona Alltag in England

Myfanwy schildert ihre Tage während des Lockdowns in einer englischen Kleinstadt.

Myfanwy Cook schrieb mir einen Brief, in dem sie anschaulich ihren Corona Alltag in der ländlichen Kleinstadt Tavistock/Devon (Dartmoor) beschreibt. Wer schon einmal Inspector Barnaby im Fernsehen gesehen hat, weiß was ich mit ländlicher Kleinstadt meine.

Ich möchte diesen Brief gerne mit dir teilen. Wie du sicher weißt, sind die Kontaktbeschränkungen der letzten Wochen in England noch deutlich drastischer und einschneidender als bei uns gewesen. Aber wie auch bei meinen anderen englischen Freunden, mit denen ich regelmäßig skype, nimmt Vanni die Herausforderung mit der üblichen Brise englischen Humors, macht das Beste daraus und hilft wo sie nur kann.

Zur Person:

Myfanvy, von ihren Freunden Vanni genannt, ist eine sehr erfahrene Schreibtrainerin und Lehrerin für Englisch als Zweitsprache. Sie entwickelt auch Lehrmaterialien für Englisch als Fremdsprache und kreatives Schreiben.

Ihre Erfahrungen erstrecken sich auf die Mount Kelly Independent School, auf Oxford Intensive of England und auf ein sehr erfolgreiches Austauschprogramm für japanische Studenten, das ebenfalls in Tavistock angesiedelt ist. Myfanwy hat eine große Anzahl an Kursen für kreatives Schreiben für viele Gruppen und Organisationen, wie z.B. Peninsula Medical School, Blenheim Palace und Devon County Council geleitet

Dear Sieglinde,

My ‚lockdown‘ day starts fairly early as I am usually at the Co-op supermarket by 7.30 a.m. with list of things that people want me to get for them. One friend has received a letter from the NHS which means she has to stay at home for three months. This is because of the medication that she takes. Another friend isn’t going into any shops, because he is 73. 

You can buy most things in the supermarkets again now with the exception of rice and tinned tomatoes. What has amazed me is the items that people don’t seem to be able to survive without. For those friends that I am shopping for they include crystallized ginger, chorizo (Spanish sausage), feta cheese and olives. There was also a Bovril¹⁾ shortage. I don’t eat meat and therefore this meat spread that you can also add hot water to and drink would never be on my shopping list!

Everyone is being very polite and trying to keep two meters apart. When I go out the streets are almost deserted except for a few runners or dog walkers. Some days there is no traffic at all in Plymouth Road, which is the road that the Bedford hotel is situated on. However, when you do meet someone you tend to almost act out some form of courtly dance with one person moving deftly to one side to let the other person part. It is rather like a dance that you’d expect to find in a Medieval palace or at a Regency Ball.

A major problem for most people locally is a shortage of seeds, compost and bedding plants. I am not a gardener in any shape or form. My gardening is limited to trying to contain the weeds and attack the brambles which seem have a vendetta against me. However, a lot of my friends and neighbours are growing their own vegetables. This is a lovely idea in theory, but it usually results in a lot of disappointment. Slugs eat most of their produce and if not they try to freeze it with often disastrous consequences.

Donnerstags wird dem NHS applaudiert.

Every Thursday night everyone in the street that I live in and all over the UK go outside at 8 pm to clap a big thank you to the NHS. We all keep our distance, but it is a token of solidarity in troubled times and in lots of house windows you will find displays similar to the ones I have taken photos of on my brief walk around Tavistock everyday.

I must confess that I like you are looking forward to being able to get together with friends for coffee, tea and cake. At the moment my day includes shopping, marking and writing.
