Puttin‘ on the Ritz

Puttin‘ on the Ritz

If you have ever watched the 1946 film Blue Skies and seen Fred Astaire’s dance routine Puttin‘ on the Ritz, you may well associate it with the Ritz in London. The song was written by Irving Berlin and was showcased first in 1930 in the musical of the same name ‚Puttin‘ on the Ritz‘.

In the Astaire version he dances and sings, dressed in a black top hat with shiny black patent leather shoes and a frock-style coat. The film conjures up a flavour of elegance and style that has almost today vanished except at weddings and other prestigious social events such as Royal Ascot and the Henley Regatta.

This elegance, style and air of sophistication is an integral part of tea at the Ritz. I am fortunate to have sampled the afternoon tea there on several occasions and it has always ticked all the boxes for me. The boxes being excellent food, great service in a place that has an aroma of history accompanied by the scent of freshly baked warm scones.

No casual clothes are allowed, but then if you wore shorts and a tea shirt it would not be the experience that enables you to imagine that you have been transported back to England in the 1920s or 30’s or earlier. Noël Coward was one of the regular faces that could be seen at the Ritz during this period.

Tea is often served in the Palm Court with a pianist playing discretely in the background, you might even hear one of Noël Coward’s compositions being played as you sip your tea or champagne. The array of teas you are offered is enough for any connoisseur of the beverage.

As a lover of cakes and patisseries it suits my palate and I have no intention of describing what I ate as if you are a devotee of afternoon tea it is a must try experience. However, afternoon tea at the Ritz close to Green Park underground station in London is like tasting a slice of history.

The special flavour of tea at the Ritz  was captured by Anthony Powell through his narrator Nicholas Jenkins in the A Dance to the Music of Time series of novels (1951- 1975) when meeting the poet Mark Members at the Ritz in the Palm Court, „It had a special atmosphere about it and the Palm Court was always filled before luncheon with ’society beauties‘, debutantes and their boyfriends, and famous actors and actresses—though the latter seldom seemed to actually lunch there. Bejewelled American ladies used to parade up and down the corridor awaiting their guests, The Ritz was more like a club than a hotel; you were bound to see your friends there. To ‚meet at the Ritz‘ was the obvious choice. It had the combination of elegance and cosiness. The Ritz had an essentially happy atmosphere which radiated from the staff. All the waiters knew everybody and became personal friends. The Ritz in those days had a courtesy and elegance unlike any other hotels; it was thought of as ‚home‘ in a sense that never applied to anywhere else“.

Thankfully, it is still a ‘courteous’ haven and in addition serves a mouth-watering and copious tea.
